Jason Derulo- Stupid Love
Lyrics:

Walking the dog in my neighborhood
Said I never would, for you for you
I got drunk on a Monday night
Hope it looks alright
Tattoo of you, uh
I'm a yes man on the loose, yeah
Maxed out all my credit cards
Bought your favorite car, times two
I'm crazy for you
Lord knows what I'd do
I'd even die for you
Whatever you need
I'm down on my knees
I guess that means
I guess that means
I'm dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
I'm stupid in love
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Stupid
I'm stupid in love,
Stupid
Re-decorate my crib
Can't believe I did
It's true, it's true
I'm ashamed but I said ok
To share a Facebook page
With you, with you
'Cause I'm a yes man on the loose, ooh, yeah
And I'll do anything for you, baby
I'm crazy for you
Lord knows what I'd do
I'd even die for you
Whatever you need
I'm down on my knees
I guess that means
I guess that means
I'm dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
I'm stupid in love
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Stupid
I'm stupid in love,
Stupid
And they can all call me crazy (crazy)
I'm a fool for you, baby (baby)
But they ain't never seen you naked, naked
They can all call me crazy
I'm a fool for you baby (baby)
But they ain't never seen you naked, naked
I'm crazy for you
Lord knows what I'd do
I'd even die for you (I'd die for you, baby)
Whatever you need
I'm down on my knees
I guess that means
I guess that means
I'm dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
I'm stupid in love
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
I'm stupid in love
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Dam da da rid a dam
Yeah, yeah
I'm stupid in love,
Yeah, yeah
Stupid

Interpretation
From analysing the lyrics of " Stupid Love" we are able to see that this song is about a guy that is deeply in love and is ready to sacrifice his all for this girl and talks about the sacrifices he'd made for her and will continue to do in order to make her happy.
Synopsis:
The video consist of two characters: a male- Jason Derulo and a female actress. From the use of analysis we figure out that the main character Jason Derulo is suppose to be a ghost/ in spirit form and we can tell as it's a previous incident and the female is reminiscing as she cherishes the memory in the property that they used to share and grows an attachment to the materialistic goods that he left behind. Additionally it starts off with the location of the house in a newly condition; ready to move out and the diegetic sounds of a news report from the television is playing in the background which is about an incident that has just occurred, as the voice of the news reporter fades the character that is dead ( Jason Derulo) appears and all the objects that we're hidden with cloths in the house are slowly un raveling.

Conceptual, Narrative or Performance Based?
I would say that this music video is a combination of both performance and narrative based ideas. The narrative ideas are quite obvious as we are being told a story of a guy that has sacrificed his life for someone he loves. However the story is told through performance- so Jason Derulo dancing and acting in the song aswell as him lip syncing.

Themes and Motifs:
Seeking acceptance- Constantly trying to fulfil her demands in order to make her happy
Power of love- Even though he may not be alive he will continue to dwell in her thoughts and has preserved a place in her heart.

Camera, Editing and Mise-en-scene:

Camera:
In terms of camera:
An over shoulder shot to show the conversation of the male and female actor.
An establishing shot of the surroundings to show the entire location.
Low angles of both the actors to suggest that they're an ideal couple and should be looked up to.
High angle of Jason Derulo to show that he's clueless, naive and vulnerable to his surroundings.
Close up of Jason Derulo's face to show the importance of him.
Camera zooming in and out as the song becomes faster to increase the intensity.

Editing:
There is CGI ( Computer Generated Images) involved in terms of effects as a way of portraying the actor as a spirit and he is shown in different places of the house but fading to remind the audience that he is just a memory. Additionally the use of the cutaways help to illustrate the incidents in time with the lyrics which I think is quite interesting as you're able to understand the story better.

Mise-en-scene:
Objects with cloth over them to suggest that they're moving out and selling the property. The use of the guitar is quite effective as it is played in the song to suggest that it symbolises his presence. The two cars he talks about in the song and then two cars presented outside the house. The use of the television as a way of getting the narrative involved.

Target Audience:
The target audience are those that are currently in love, been in love, experienced some problems in their relationship or have lost someone close to them and will listen to the song as a way of remembering the person.

Ideas I could use in my own video:
I like the way the CGI had a meaning behind it and expressed one of the important matters quite simply. I also liked the use of the television as a prop and the diegetic sound of the news reporter stating the news as a way of making the audience aware of what the story is going to be about. I particularly liked how there were two different shots of the same location to show the contrast in time.

Pharell Williams- Happy

Lyrics:

It might seem crazy what I'm about to say
Sunshine she's here, you can take away
I'm a hot air balloon, I could go to space
With the air, like I don't care baby by the way
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do
Here come bad news talking this and that
Yeah, give me all you got, don't hold back
Yeah, well I should probably warn you I'll be just fine
Yeah, no offense to you don't waste your time
Here's why
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do
Happy, bring me down
Can't nothing, bring me down
Love is too happy to bring me down
Can't nothing, bring me down
I said bring me down
Can't nothing, bring me down

Interpretation:

The lyrics of the song attempt to spread a positive message which is shown through the use of the word "happy" which is repeated throughout majority of the song as a reminder to the audience to stay happy. The song also mentions how you can get put down and your happy mood is ruined instantly whereas this song reinforces how love will help keep the happiness maintained.

Synopsis: The video is about the different type of individuals of all ages and skills.
Throughout the video we witness several individuals with various different roles coming together. From  the lyrics we are able to identify that the song is based on leaving a positive influence on everyone and also demonstrates the enthusiasm through the song as it uses a mainly performance base idea. The use of the performers being different ages is quite powerful as the viewers acknowledge the fact that happiness isn't felt by a particular age group or a certain individual but can be felt by anyone and the video uses several individuals as an example.

Conceptual, Narrative or Performance?

The music video uses a performance based idea throughout the video as each performer is doing a form of dancing. Using a performance based idea instead of conceptual works well for this song as dancing is known to be a stress reliever and because the song attempts to spread the message of being happy it goes well with the theme. I also think unintentionally the song can be narrative as it combines several individuals together sharing happiness and because they all are different from each other it forms an understanding that each individual deserves happiness.

Themes and Motifs:
The themes are of enthusiasm and sharing positivity through the things that you enjoy and are skilled at.
Staying happy and do what makes you happy in other words get rid of the negative and surround yourself with the positive.

Editing:
The video portrays each individual as important and they are utilised through the cutaways and different locations to reinforce that you can go to the places that make you happy. The cutting pace of "happy"  goes in time with the lyrics which is quite effective as it builds the enthusiasm as it gets closer to the chorus. As the song is quite upbeat it is important to make the cutting rate fast so it allows the viewers to engage with the song better.

Camera:
In terms of camera, panning and tracking is used in the beginning to set the location so that it sets the scene for the audience and it follows a simplistic structure which works out to be quite effective. Throughout the video we are shown a repeated sequence of panning, tracking and establishing shots to show the surroundings of each individual performer and how it relates to their life. Lip sync is used in the whole video as it implies that no one is singled out and everyone should sing it.

Mise-en-scene:
The video uses different occupations and ethnic groups to target everyone and that everyone deserves the right to be happy.  The song utilises the contrast of dark and bright colours quite well to show the comparison of bright colours having a connotation of positivity and dark colours having a connotation of negativity. Additionally the use of the clothes help make an assumption about the kind of role/occupation each individual has for example the business men/ people working in a professional environment are seen to be wearing suits and the choir staff are wearing cloaks which are usually worn in a choir.

Target Audience:
There isn't a specific audience for this video, infact it's aimed at everyone that seeks happiness. The target audience are encouraged to buy the record as it is attempts to target every viewer as it repeats 'you' trying to engage with the viewers and making them feel appreciated.

Ideas we can use in our own video:
I like the use of cutaways as it helps display a lot of different events and I think it will be a good idea to use in my music video.
I particularly like the use of colours in attires to display the mood and themes of the song, I think it's an effective way to get ideas across and it also helps represent the types of characters.
The use of establishing shots to show the entire scene.

Lorde- Royals

Lyrics:

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address, in the torn up town No post code envy
But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece. Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen Bee And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
 Let me live that fantasy
My friends and I we've cracked the code
We count our dollars on the train to the party
And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this
 We didn't come from money
But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair
And we'll never be royals It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen Bee And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy (Ooh ooh oh)
We're bigger than we ever dreamed, and I'm in love with being queen (Ooh ooh oh)
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair
 And we'll never be royals
It don't run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler, you can call me Queen Bee And baby I'll rule (I'll rule I'll rule I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

Interpretation:

The lyrics of "Royals" illustrate that the song is about a hatred for mainstream culture and the thought that we're categorised into groups consisting of either rich and fortunate people who are surrounded by luxuries; "jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash" or those that are living in a fantasy and are struggling to achieve a common mans lifestyle; " we count our dollars on the train to the party" suggesting that they have to use a large fraction of their money in order to witness a fragment of a rich persons lifestyle.

Synopsis: The video starts off with an establishing shot of houses and is tracked to show the atmosphere of the location of the people its being aimed at. There's a cutaway to the singers face which holds no emotion and then a cutaway to a messy bed and then a mid-close up of the singer to show that the song will perhaps underline her attitudes. There's a cutaway to a basic room which consists of a television, a plant, cream/off-white curtains and a portrait and the lyrics: " I'm not proud of my address" are used to portray the idea of being unsatisfied. During the shots of the singer Lorde she is seen to be lip syncing to create the understanding that the song will have some relevance to her and the fact that she is lip syncing further implies that she is portraying her feelings personally. There is a cutaway of a shot of a white male sitting up in the same bed shown in the beginning and he is looking out the window, another cutaway of a male next to a tap with his face down that has been soaked and he is wearing a silver chain. There is a cutaway to a close up of the same male with a silver chain and beauty spots. The video mainly focuses on two individuals that are sharing a house, we are also shown the cliché stereotypes of males involved in sports when there's a shot of the actor looking up at a basketball net and walking in water that's just over his shoulders. There's two shots and overhead shots of two white males boxing and the lyrics " let me be your ruler" to show that they are each others support or guidance. We are shown a high angle of a male shaving his hair in a bathroom and the same male standing in a swimming pool with his head under the water with his arms crossed to show his isolation. We are also shown a shot of a male laying on a train platform and a shot of 4 males from behind and it is focused on one to show the division and a close up shot of him with his head leaning on a bus/train window. At the end we are shown the same establishing tracked shot of the location of houses to show that it is continuous and that this is their daily routine.

The music video is a narrative and performance based as it attempts to tell a story through a couple of males and the female singer lip syncing. The lifestyle of each individual is simply based on their daily routines and what they enjoy i.e sports.

Themes and Motifs:

The themes are connected to the mainstream culture. There's themes of isolation: several shots of individuals on their own to imply that they are on their own. Competition: two shot of the 2 males boxing.

Editing:

There's cutaways used through majority of the video to show the various actions throughout the day of a common individual. The cutting pace of royals is with the music to make the story quite clear within the viewers mind. There is a slow motion effect throughout the video so you are able to witness the different individuals. Lip sync is used throughout most of the video to show the two different perspectives of a female and male.

Mise-en-scene:
In terms of Mise-en-scene we are shown various elements from basic furniture like the television, the portrait hung on the wall, the plant and the curtains to suggest that they can only afford basic equipment or are happy with what they have. We are shown several locations mainly in the houses of the individuals to suggest that majority of their time is spent there and also the locations involve the idea that men are interested in sports or being athletic.

Camera:
The use of the two shot and shoulder helps combine two individuals together. The use of the establishing shots of the locations so we are aware of what the context is. Mid shots and close ups of the singer lip syncing instead of a long shot as it'll have more of an effect if the audience can view a closer view of the singer as it seems forceful. High shot to show the individual in the swimming being vulnerable and lacking power.

Target Audience:
The target audience isn't aimed at any specific person but in fact is aimed at anyone who doesn't support the clichè music videos or enjoys to standout and seeks satisfaction from being unique. They are encouraged to buy the record as it reinforces that it relates to every individuals lifestyle.

Ideas I could use in my own video:
I enjoyed the fact that the song uses a narrative as it makes the song more memorable and it leaves the viewers with something to remember and I found it interesting how the song begins and ends with the same establishing shot which I might consider using in my own video as it leaves a last impression. I also like the way that the video doesn't focus on one individual but quite a few that are going through a similar phase as it shows that there's always more than one person going through the same phase. I like how the cutting rate is in time with the music as it has more of an effect, as a viewer you feel as if you are involved in the song so you're able to empathise. The use of the cutaways made the video more effective as it is quite rapid and the still shots forced us to make an assumption of what the individuals lives are like.

A conceptual and Performance based proposal.

Lyrics:

First I'll acknowledge
Your trust has been broken now
A successful recovery
I pray for us at night

Blessed me with a second chance
Never thought I'd see your face again
Learned a lot through trial and error
Tryna make it right

Make it right
Make it right
Make it right
It's time to do ya right
Woooooooah woah, wooooooooaaah

Missin' ya good intentions
Missin' ya from a distance
Hope ya did the same

I know that I caused a problem
I Know that I left you livid
Pushed you far away

Learned it don't pay to lie
Costs more to see you cry
Sayin' nothing gets you nowhere fast
Imma hold it back inside

Well now that I'm back around ya
Nothing else really matters
Hope ya feel the same

First I'll acknowledge
Your trust has been broken now
A successful recovery
I pray for us at night

Blessed me with a second chance
Never thought I'd see your face again
Learned a lot through trial and error
Tryna make it right

Make it right
Make it right
Make it right
It's time to do ya right
Woooooooah woah, wooooooooaaah

Goin' through all the motions
Tryna find a reason
Why we ended that way

Nothin' in life is perfect
When you're changing like the seasons
That's what they used to say

Cause goin' to sleep alone at night
I don't wanna close my eyes
Wanna give you all I have to give
No more holdin' back this time

Now that I'm back around ya
Nothin' around me matters
Hope ya feel the same

First I'll acknowledge
Your trust has been broken now
A successful recovery
I pray for us at night

Blessed me with a second chance
Never thought I'd see your face again
Learned a lot through trial and error
Tryna make it right

Make it right (make it right, make it right)
Make it right (make it right, make it right)
Make it right (make it right, make it right)
It's time to do ya right
Woooooooah woah, wooooooooaaah

You know Imma do you right
You know Imma do you right
You know Imma do you right
You know Imma do you right
Imma do you right
You know Imma do you right

I think this song should be conceptual and performance based as it will portrayed better.

Lyrics:
Mo' money, mo'-mo' money
Mo' money, mo' problem
Oh yeah

If I was flipping burgers on the night shift, would you choose me?
Would you let me take you home if I drove a hooptie?

Cause every time I see you, I be screamin' "Hallelujah"
But you're all about the Benjamins, I see right through ya

I'm still gonna get stoned
So you could go ahead and break your bones
Cause all I've ever been told
Mo' money, mo' problems, so I'd rather be broke

And all my people say, whoo
And all my people say, whoo
Mo' money, mo' problems
So I'd rather be broke

You just want one thing
My love ain't enough
I was so busy tryna make this shit last
That I didn't notice she was kissing my cash

Cause every time I see you, I be screamin' "Hallelujah"
But you're all about the Benjamins, I see right through ya

I'm still gonna get stoned
So you could go ahead and break your bones
Cause all I've ever been told
Mo' money, mo' problems, so I'd rather be broke

And all my people say, whoo
And all my people say, whoo
Mo' money, mo' problems
So I'd rather be broke

Whatcha gonna do when you're out of favors?
Are you gonna chase this paper?
Whatcha gonna do when the good Lord age ya?
Are you gonna chase this paper?

Cause all I've ever been told
Mo' money, mo' problems
So I'd rather be broke
Stevie ready for 'em!
Mo' money, mo' problems
So I'd rather be broke

Mo' money, mo'-mo' money
Mo' money, mo' problems, baby
Mo' money, mo'-mo' money
Mo' money, mo' problem

Mo' money, mo' problems
So I'd rather be broke
(Static)
Ah, mmm, gotta get this damn TV fixed..
